\nIn my main career, I’m a computer scientist/data scientist in my late 20s with: a Bsc and Msc in Computer Science, an attempt at a PhD in Computer Science that ended with everything but the thesis, lots of extra training and certificates related to data science and machine learning, and 7+ years of professional research experience in my field. Whether it’s research or otherwise, I love stories in all their forms. In terms of past writing, I’ve self-published one novella under a pen name so far, first-authored 8 academic publications, and contributed writing to one non-fiction tech book. I think my career has helped me practice concise writing and rigorous logical thinking.
\nThroughout my life, I’ve been a very broad consumer of entertainment: movies, shows, fiction, non-fiction, manga/manhwa/manhua, anime, light novels, music, podcasts, games, kdramas (I’ve only seen 1 cdrama and 1 jdrama), twitch, youtube, and reddit. But writing is the purest form of stories to me.
\nAnd now I ramble for a bit
\nSo in my career as a fiction author, I write Fantasy and Sci-Fi that’s very focused on characters, their growth, and their relationships. I tend towards the young adult or new adult categories, and since I’ve enjoyed a lot of action shōnen and slice-of-life shōjo, my stories tend towards traits that might feel like those at times.
\nWhile I only have one self-published novella released, I’m not really new to writing fiction. I first started in primary/elementary school creative writing, and aside from school requirements I often practiced on my own (my brother was my earliest reader in that sense) and I used to read a dictionary looking for cool words to use. I continued studying literature in school up until sixth form/junior year high school. After which, in the last years of secondary/high school and throughout my years of tertiary education, my supplementary writing-focused subjects and courses became less freely creative and more focused on topics like communication, regional culture, and the effective dissemination of research, but I still continued writing fiction of some form when I could as time allowed or as I felt the urge. So my unpublished writing consists of a handful of short stories, 2 novels, and many very short stories in messages to friends detailing my real-life experiences with a dramatic comedic style.
\nBy keeping in mind what I myself would want to read (among other considerations, but this is definitely a high-priority quality), these character-focused stories usually have a faster moving plot because as an adult it’s difficult for me to imagine giving a ton of hours to only one story when there’s so many to choose from in various forms. That means a slow and massively expansive fantasy that goes beyond 2 or 3 books isn’t really what I prefer, although I’ve enjoyed longer running stories in my youth and can understand the preference.
\nIt seems especially important nowadays to verify humanness as a writer. The choice to use a pen name and faceless profile doesn’t exacty help with that, and my main career might only raise more suspicion. But the choice is only to maintain a separation from my main career, and to let that soft protection of identity allow for more freedom in my writing and expression during this unvalidated stage of an early career in fiction.
\nThat being said, I can appreciate the value of AI in many domains, and I’ve worked on published contributions that use or try to improve upon AI in many domains. However, I personally don’t use it for writing (except in grammar checking and search) as I think that takes some of the fun out of the craft.
\nThe choice of a faceless pen name would normally limit what I could share of who I am as a person, but my life has mostly been the consumption of entertainment and the development of that main career. Add to that some: friendship, love, a few years working abroad, and a couple failed attempts at building a tech product as a sustainable business with a friend or two, and I think that’s an interesting life. But everyone has had an interesting life, so instead, my preferred hobbies: hiking/pleasant walks, cooking, trying new food, and admiring wildlife from a safe and comfortable position.
